OK so why start theBluView. Well I was getting fed up with scouring the internet for the latest unbiased news and opinions on BluRay. Yes I am a fan of BluRay and I’ll explain the reasons below. However there are a lot of people/companies out there whose intention is to spread FUD and confusion about BluRay. Some of these are IT/Software/infrastructure companies with other agendas. Many of these are involved with future technologies which may mean that you no longer own movies but either download them for a limited time or will charge you per-view.

Well I for one have always been a movie collector VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and now BluRay I’ve collected them all and if I want a movie I want to be able to watch it when I want to, I don’t want to wait hours for it to download and I want to be able to watch it as many times as I like. This is what some of these companies pushing online movie download and rental be it on PC or consoles do not want. They want to charge you each time you watch it.

The other argument against BluRay is that there are other more convenient formats coming such as solid state storage and USB sticks. Well I lose enough USB sticks and I don’t want hundreds of them around my home. I like my movies in large packaging; I like to be able to find them easily. Remember the artwork on Laserdisc (and if you don’t know Laserdisc think the same size as a 12” LP)

The other issue is the experience. Many downloads are currently at 720p or lower resolution and not at full 1080p HD. Also if you have invested in a top flight home cinema system then you undoubtedly have many speakers around your listening/viewing position. Again you may be lucky if you get Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on download, whereas many BluRay releases carry Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio 5.1 lossless audio (that’s as it sounded in the mixing studio with no compression) and/or even true discrete 7.1 sound tracks. It’s all about quality and the experience. Currently the best option if that’s what you want is BluRay. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure that the advanced features of BluRay will come to other mediums but BluRay has them now (yeah I know it’s only just finished with profile 2.0) it’s the size and format we like, let’s keep it as long as we can and keep collecting…
